Eltz Castle

My laptop is finally back and although it does not always do what I want it to, or what I wish it would, it is repaired and back in my loving care, as are all the photos that I have stored on it.  I never thought that I would so dearly miss a bit of electronic gadgetry!

Hubby and I took a very much needed day off from work last week and with the family took a day trip to Eltz Castle, about 90 minutes from where we live, and situated in the countryside not far from the Moselle River (spelled Mosel in German).  We lucked out and had the most marvelous warm sunny weather that day, and like Goldilocks would have said, "not too hot, and not too cold".  It was perfect for sight seeing.

This is how it looks as you walk down the one kilometer long road to reach the castle grounds, and as you turn a curve in the road, there is this spectacular view of the castle itself nestled on a tiny hill in the wooded valley.
After stopping for a bit of lunch on the outdoor terrace on the castle grounds, the family went for a tour of the inside, while I waited outside with Cody.  Yes, he came along for the ride that day and loved every minute of it.

Cody and I walked all around, and eventually tiring, we found a quiet corner to sit so we could wait for the others.  Cody had a great view of the trail where he knew Christina, his human "mommy" would have to walk down to meet us.  And this is the view of the castle that we had from the bench.  I could have sat there all day long, with not a care in the world, and that breath-taking view filling me with awe and wonder.

The castle is under renovations, hence the crane in some of the pictures and plastic covered scaffolding.

Built in the 12th century, amazingly the castle is still privately owned by the same family for the past 800 years and has not been turned into a federally operated historical site.  Entrance fees into the castle help to pay for upkeep.

Castle Etlz is definitely a place worth seeing!

  1. WOW that castle is just amazing!!!! I can just imagine what it looks like on the inside. It is fun to think about the people who own and lived in it. It makes me think of the movie Ever After with Drew Barrymore--have you ever seen that movie? It is one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing--I loved seeing these pictures--wouldn't it be fun to be Queen for a day.

  2. Amazing just doesn't cover it!!
Last winter I really got into reading about British & European History anywhere from 1200's to the 1700's. I can't imagine living in these old cold stone monoliths even with todays heating abilities.
    Great Post!!

WoW! The castle is sooooo amazingly situated in the beautiful landscape there. I can't even imagine what it must look like on the inside. I am so glad that you were all able to get away for the day to go and tour it. So grateful the your laptop is now home and well again so you could show these beautiful pictures of your day trip. I love seeing where my friends go, especially those in countries I will probably never see. What a special treat for me Debby.

So funny that you think of little girls too when you see sweet peas. I think we must be so much alike in our thoughts and family life. You like chickens, I like chickens. You like lots of children, I like lots of children. You love to go and see the beauty around you, I like seeing the beauty around me.

I feel I am very blessed to know my sweet friend in Germany!!!
I hope today is full of beauty for you.
    sending love...

  5. I am speechless....what an incredible place! I wanted to come and say hello! Thanks for coming to visit my blog! I love your dog....Border Collie????? Yes, My Abbey is a natural and she has put some of the high dollar dogs to shame.....I just love it! I had a "grade" horse for 23 years and we used to kick butt in the show ring, all of the registered horses owners used to get really mad when we showed up! My son says watching her point on a bird is like : "a son hittiing a home run".....he just loves her! You are so lucky to live in Germany right now...I have missed the chance to ever go to Europe....but I can see it thru blogs like yours! Sandy @ 521 Lake Street
